Sign up for our next BPI training course!  We will be holding a BPI Building Analyst and BPI Envelope Professional training (with written and field exams included) starting on Monday, July 10th, and ending on Friday, July 14th, 2017.  The classroom component of the course will be held in our office at the Howe Center in Rutland, VT.  The field testing component of the course will be held at three carefully chosen houses that represent a wide range of possible scenarios that you are likely to encounter on a real energy audit.  We limit our classroom size to 5 students so that everyone gets an ample amount of hands-on experience with the energy auditing tools, and it also provides an intimate learning environment so our students can truly build an understanding of the course content.  Call us for more details at 802-266-0999 or sign up below!  The course also comes with our 100% satisfaction money back guarantee.  If you do not like something about the training and you decide you would like a refund by noon on the first day of training we will issue you a full refund.

BPI Training at Shaping Energies LLC

Our BPI Building Analyst, Envelope Professional, and/or Heating Professional training courses are five days long (starting on Monday and ending on Friday) with written exams on Friday starting at 1:00 PM.  Field exams are held over the weekend or on Monday or Tuesday of the week following the training.

Our BPI training classes and the testing are both held at our office in Rutland, Vermont.  Classes scheduled are based on demand, but we generally offer a class once every 4-8 weeks.  If you are just looking for BPI testing please give us a call and we will set up a BPI testing session for our earliest availability.

Additionally, the class is very comprehensive, and we do a lot of problem solving with building science concepts.  We also go out into the field and do 3 energy audits on residential buildings during every class and you get a ton of hands on experience with the tools and equipment.  In fact, we do not allow our class sizes to be larger than 5 students because we want to be certain that you get the hands-on experience you need to use all of the necessary diagnostic equipment in the field.  If scheduling permits, we also like to take our students out to one of our job sites and go through our installation techniques as well as real world complications that occur on jobsites.  We may even go out on a "test-out" if we are doing one close to the office and the schedule allows for it!  Where else are you going to get that experience in a BPI training?!  We do everything we can to make sure you pass the tests and develop an honest understanding of building science as well as how to apply the principles required to do energy audits and make pointed, accurate recommendations.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any quesions.  We look forward to introducing you to the wonderful world of building science!

Shaping Energies' BPI Building Analyst & Envelope Professional Course (more detail)

The course that we currently offer will provide interpretation of the standards for both the Building Analyst and Envelope Professional, with the intent to prepare students for the written and field certification exams.  This training will focus on the building sciences related to the physics and control strategies for air, heat and moisture.  This includes instruction in the proper use of pressure differentials as a diagnostic tool, and the use of established analytical testing equipment such as blower doors, manometers, flow meters, infrared cameras, carbon monoxide and combustible gas sensors, to analyze and correct building performance issues.  Several BPI health and safety standards relating to proper venting of combustion appliances, establishing correct building airflow standards for occupants, and controlling moisture and other indoor pollutants will be explored, along with the science behind these standards.

The 5 days of training per student is a combination of classroom, laboratory and field exercises designed for persons with no knowledge of construction or building science, however, some prior home performance experience is a plus.  Reading from the following textbooks will be recommended and highly encouraged:

  • Home Perfomance Diagnostics (by Corbett Lundsford)
  • Residential Energy (by John Krigger and Chris Dorsi)
  • Insulate and Weatherize (Taunton's Build Like A Pro)
  • Saturn Energy Auditor Field Guide (by John Krigger)

Students should be equipped with a standard calculator and a laptop computer (special accomidations can be made for those who do not have access to a laptop).  Any additional diagnostic equipment they care to bring for instruction or comparative purposes is welcome.  The training will be followed by written and field exams for duel certifications of Building Analyst and Envelope Professional.  Students will individually demonstrate their skills and knowledge in the subject areas of building systems analysis, identification of potential health and safety issues, installation standards for recommended energy upgrades, and performance features of the optimized building envelope. All written and field exams will be supervised by accredited BPI proctors.

BPI Training & Certification Abstract

The Building Performance Institute was established to assure that contractors serving the home performance industry possess the skills and knowledge necessary to provide their customers safe and efficient energy related services.  BPI is nationally recognized by the American National Standards Institute, Inc (ANSI) to establish standards and best practices for the home performance industry, and to certify home performance professionals as Building Analyst, Envelope Professional, Heating Professional, Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Professional, and Multi-family Specialist.  Many federal, state and utility initiatives require BPI certifications for contractor participation in energy efficiency projects.
